From those who've been there

  • The transformative experience offered by the School of Yoga, under the masterful guidance of its founder, Joan, was truly exceptional. The setting for this enriching retreat was a haven of tranquility; the retreat center itself was impeccably maintained, boasting lush, stunning grounds that provided a perfect backdrop for deep practice and introspection. Crucially, the center's location was ideally situated, offering easy access to a breathtaking, semi-private beach resort in the vibrant coastal region of Goa, India, allowing for moments of peaceful contemplation by the ocean. I wholeheartedly and without reservation recommend Joan’s comprehensive yoga teachers programs and her profoundly insightful retreats. The School of Yoga is not merely a place of practice; it is a source of the profound wisdom and authentic transformation that Joan so generously and the profound wisdom she shares through the School of Yoga. Many thanks and looking forward to the upcoming classes in March 2026 and future retreats.

  • What a wonderful experience! Two weeks of amazing yoga, inspiring lectures and discussions, and time spent with a like-minded international community - surrounded by the jungle, the ocean, and good vibes everywhere. We started each day with amazing yoga classes guided by Joan, who has always been a very special teacher for me. Being in her classes feels deeply familiar, yet there is always something new to learn. After a brunch and some time to ourselves, which I mostly spent by and in the ocean, we had very interesting lectures, and I am always amazed by the boundless passion and dedication to yoga that Joan embodies. Before watching Goa’s beautiful sunsets, we slowed down with restoratives, meditation, or a program led by inspiring guest teachers. Mandrem, where the training took place, was perfect because after dinner we had time to enjoy Ayurvedic treatments, go shopping or just sit and listen to the sound of the ocean. It was wonderful to share all of this with others, and I am deeply touched by how, in just two weeks, strangers become friends and form a real bond. I am forever grateful for this experience and will always look back on this trip with a full heart.

  • I have participated in several retreats and trainings with Joan Hyman over the past couple of years and can recommend the experience to anybody who is committed to deepening their practice. Especially in this 10-day training, we were able to deconstruct aspects of the practice that you generally don't have so much time for: how to access and use the bandhas, meditation and restorative practices, and the use of the chair and other props to adapt and modify your practice. I have a lot more tools available now to make my practice and teachings available to a variety of students. Tina, who organised this training, did a fantastic job: she is meticulous, easily approachable in case of questions and just fun to be around. The Soami Retreat Center lends itself very well to this training due to its remote location and the peace & quiet that supports the inward journey. Already looking forward to the next training with Joan!

  • We were able to experience a transformative time in the midst of nature in the Austrian Alps. The organisation of the Teacher Training by Tina was superb, the accommodation was great, the participants from all over the world heart-warming. We came as strangers and left as friends. Joan is a great teacher who teaches with a lot of patience, precision and warmth. Her many years of experience make her a very accomplished teacher. Many thanks to everyone who made these 10 days what they are. An unforgettable memory and the anticipation of further trainings or retreats with Joan

  • The trip was enlightening, transformational and the exact experience I was seeking. Joan was knowledgeable, reliable and quick to respond to any inquiries. She made suggestions that would likely ensure smooth travel; I followed them and it worked. She is great at what she does; a true guru! The accommodations were comfortable and the food was delicious. I am grateful to have found Joan 🙏

  • My yoga experience in the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica was nothing short of magical. Surrounded by lush rainforest, the sounds of exotic animals, and the beauty of the ocean, every practice felt deeply connected to nature. The setting itself created a sense of peace and wonder that made each moment on the mat even more meaningful. Practicing with Joan Hyman as my teacher was truly inspiring. Her wisdom, guidance, and thoughtful instruction brought depth to every class, encouraging both physical growth and inner reflection. Joan has an incredible ability to create a welcoming and supportive environment while sharing her passion and knowledge of yoga. The combination of Costa Rica’s breathtaking landscape and Joan’s exceptional teaching made this retreat an unforgettable experience. I left feeling stronger, more grounded, and profoundly grateful for the opportunity to practice in such a magical place @todoamorlife. The Osa Peninsula is a destination that nourishes the soul, and this journey will stay with me for years to come.

  • Some memories stay with you for a lifetime. I'm sure this retreat is one of them. We stayed on the Peninsula de Osa, the most beautiful and authentic natural setting imaginable, surrounded by the ocean, lush rainforest, colorful birds and cute monkeys. The retreat center was amazing, bulit with so much love and care and Jenn, the host, made us immediately feel at home. Each day started and ended with inspriring yoga classes with the sound of the jungle and the ocean in the background. I've been practicing with Joan for a long time, and there's always something to learn and the oppurtunity to deepen my practice. These classes continue to be the most transformative for me. I also loved the excursions like the boat tour and the waterful hike. They allowed us to experience even more of this beautiful place while having fun and connecting as a group. One of the things I love about Joan's trainings and retreats is the amazing international community. This time was no different, I felt at ease with everybody from the beginning, built meaningful connections, and I'm sure some of them will last for a long time.

  • Joan never fails to bring together the best group of yogis. This retreat was perfect from start to end. The community was thoughtfully engaged not just in two yoga classes each day, but also in daily adventures, activities, mindful rest time, and delicious healthy meals eaten as a group. Joining one of Joan's retreats means becoming part of her international community, making new friends, and deepening your yoga practice profoundly. Aside from the yoga, my favorite part of this retreat was the nature: exploring the jungle, taking a boat ride through the most beautiful waters, and getting a chance to surf for the first time ever!

  • This was a truly transformative experience. I had no idea what to expect other than yoga and relaxation, and I was met with so much more than that. Community, personal growth, endless fun and joy, learning, and a multitude of long-lasting memories. Every single moment of this experience was thoughtfully designed and intentional. All I had to do was show up - which is such an underrated part of the cost. In everyday life, we are constantly making decisions: what/where to eat, what to do with our time, who to hang out with etc. It's so nice that in the span of a week, with all of those things handled, my body was able to truly relax. So yes, I got yoga and relaxation, but I also got an experience I will never forget. I will absolutely be joining a retreat like this again in the future.
